Safety and security in Phnom Penh Cambodia

If you are planning a trip to Phnom Penh, then you also need to know some safety tips same as your concern to the attractions and things to do in Phnom Penh. Recently we visited Phnom Penh, however we had really safe and memorable trip there without any single issue. Although we spent our evenings along the riverside and inside the restaurants, we also prepared with travel safety tips specially for Phnom Penh. As we travelled with a kid and as a family, we always considered safety tips and also received some advice from the hotel staff we stayed.

Here are some possible risks in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and how you can prevent those by preparing for such situations. These all are as we heard from the hotel staff and some of the tuk tuk drivers we talked. Hope these tips will be helpful for you to enjoy a pleasant holiday among all the things to do in Phnom Penh!

Prepare for Bag snatching

Bag snatching is common in city area and as we heard these things can be happened by a passing by motorcycle. In Phnom Penh, you will find lot of motor cycles. Sometimes it is unbelievable when we saw traffic by motor bikes. To keep your things safe, never wear your bag on back. Keep your bag inside when you travel by a tuk tuk. Also keep the valuable items locked in the safe in your hotel room when you visit out.

When you walk for a little distance or if you enjoy a walking city tour, wear your bag, camera and other accessories on the shoulder which is not on the traffic side.

Keep your smart phones inside

We also used our normal digital camera for photographing the street views and we did not want to take our smart phones out.

Hire tuk tuks with safe

Phnom Penh safety

Always try to hire tuk tuks with the help of your hotel staff. We usually hired tuk tuks which are parked in front of the hotel we stayed. Also keep some idea on taxi rates. Usually tuk tuk rates are $2- $4 for short trips across the city.(in February 2017) When you have some idea on the rates, you don’t have to worry about paying higher rates for the tuk tuk drivers. It is possible that tuk tuk drivers will ask you some higher amount or they will also ask more money when you complete your ride. Before you get into the tuk tuk, remember to agree the rate. Also if they ask more money when you complete the ride and if it is an amount of few dollars, better to pay than arguing. Bargaining is common in Phnom Penh. If your tuk tuk driver asks for $4, you can bargain with them for a $3 ride. Anyway after all it is all about $1-$2 discount and better not to argue with them much. 🙂

We had tuk tuk rides around the city of Phnom Penh during our Phnom Penh itinerary and we didn’t face any problem. These are some tips to keep in your mind to spend a safe holiday in Phnom Penh.

Hire taxis for night time

If you want to enjoy night life or if you plan travelling at night, always taxis are better than tuk tuks and motos. There are taxi companies which you can contact or you can always seek the help from the hotel staff. When you alight from your taxi, always be aware of the surrounding for your safe.

Safety Tips to Visit Phnom Penh - Cambodia
Street views from Phnom Penh – Cambodia
Learn about travel safety before you travel

Read more about travel safety and be equipped with tips and ideas to prevent security issues in Phnom Penh. You can also check online travel safety training course and learn more about how to behave in a situation if you become a victim. It is better to know more about accommodation safety, about facing the challenges in a new place and how to face for natural disasters before you travel. This will be helpful to you not only to travel Phnom Penh but to travel anywhere in the world.

Don’t buy things from the kids or don’t give money to them

We also found kids selling items in front of Royal Palace. It is a really pity thing to see. However we found lot of advices which asks not to buy from kids. Behind these kids, there are adults who do the business using the kids to get attention.

Also there are campaigns in Phnom Penh which raise awareness about orphanages. ‘Don’t create more Orphans’ is one of the slogan I came across. Think twice before you donate to orphanages. Check properly and decide. Work with reputed institutions if you plan for donations during your stay in Phnom Penh.

It is advised to support families not for orphanages. It seems some orphanages recruit kids to attract donations. Although I am not so sure of such kind of activities in Phnom Penh, I came across articles and banners which spread the message of ‘don’t create more Orphans’

Buy Traveller’s insurance

In Cambodia, there are international hospitals. However medical facilities are not up to international standards everywhere. As I found the medical facilities are limited and evacuation cost can be extremely high. So, in order to cover your costs in an emergency it is always a better idea to buy traveller’s insurance which can cover at least the basic emergency situations which can happen.

Above are some of the travel safety tips and possible scams which you will face in Phnom Penh. However, if you know how to behave and if you have some idea of possible incidents, you are always safe. We had really safe and enjoyable trip in Phnom Penh and we would love to visit Phnom Penh and other parts of Cambodia again!

The Khmer Rouge killed large numbers of Cambodians and dumped their dead bodies at the many killing fields that are scattered in different parts of the country. Although you will not get excited by visiting the killing fields of Phnom Penh, it will be a place to find the recent history of the country.

Phnom-Penh-Itinerary

We are just after a short trip to Phnom Penh Cambodia. So I want to share our Phnom Penh Itinerary before I forget some details. 🙂 Cambodia was in our bucket list from a long time; however our first plan was to visit Siem Riep, which is one of the popular destinations in Cambodia. But, with many reasons, finally we decided to choose Phnom Penh for this short holiday which was just 4 days in Cambodia. Till I write more details about Phnom Penh city and things to do in Phnom Penh in detail, here is our itinerary which was really relaxed and enjoyable. Instead of visiting many attractions in Phnom Penh, we wanted to make this trip a relaxing holiday which gives more time for our kid to enjoy with us.

Past few months were busy for us. We are just after a holiday in Sri Lanka. We even experienced a  five days itinerary around Singapore. So, it was bit tiresome and we didn’t want to walk around a lot.But we wanted to visit another country too!

After getting our Cambodia visa from the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Singapore, we started planning our trip. We booked our flight tickets from Jet Airways which is a popular budget airline. Although it says Jet Airways is popular as a budget airline, actually it was not budgeted with quality as we expected. We were bit nervous with our flight experience as this was the first time we travelled through a budget airline. It was easier for us to save some money from the services which we don’t want to use such as checked luggage. Overall we had great experience with Jet Airways flight to Phnom Penh.

Phnom Penh itinerary with kids
Our kid enjoyed his time at the Frangipani Royal Palace Hotel. It is located in walking distance to most of the major attractions in Phnom Penh,Cambodia

Our hotel stay for the 3 nights was Frangipani Royal Palace Hotel in Phnom Penh and that’s the best selection we did for our trip. The hotel is strategically located near the most of the popular attractions in Phnom Penh such as Royal Palace, Museum, Riverside and Wat Ounalum. We could walk to these places in few minutes and therefore we didn’t feel much tired with our 3 years old kid.

We could enjoy good food, beautiful views and friendly staff during our stay at the Frangipani Royal Hotel in Phnom Penh.

Here is our sample itinerary for 4 days in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. However, I don’t want to add timing or even having meal here as these are common things to do in any place.

In our day 2 of the Phnom Penh trip, we actually wanted to keep our kid happy and calm. We didn’t carry his stroller as we found Phnom Penh is not stroller friendly. So we wanted to plan the day with kids friendly attractions to keep kid happy while we exploring Phnom Penh. Royal Palace and National Museum are just opposite to our hotel. So we decided to visit these major attractions during the day. We had plans to visit the Kids City Asia at the evening to spend happy hours with our kid.

After our breakfast at the Frangipani Royal Hotel, we walked to the National Museum. The National Museum Building itself is just beautiful and attractive. We spent among the historical exhibits. As we are Buddhists and from Sri Lanka which is another Asian Country with lot of historical attractions related to Buddhism, we could find some similarities in the exhibits and we enjoyed the place much. Our son had good time walking along the museum and at the indoor garden.

We also wanted to watch the cultural show at the National Museum, however finally we decided not to buy tickets. Do you know why? We were in doubt of watching the cultural show with a kid. We were in doubts of him screaming and disturbing the others who watch the show. Anyway we could listen to the Khmer music while we were at the Royal Palace. That was one of best experiences we had in Phnom Penh.

Well, back to our itinerary in Phnom Penh!

After visiting the National Museum, we returned to our hotel room and refreshed. On our way to the hotel room, we always experienced the street views and the views of the park opposite to the Phnom Penh National Museum which is Veal Preah Man Park. This park is really beautiful with men facing the four directions. However we didn’t enter into the park in anytime during our stay. Later we found that this park which is also next to the Royal Palace was used for cremation of the late King’s body.

There are different pavilions and buildings at the Royal Palace which are open for the public.

Phnom Penh itinerary-tuk-tuk-rides
Starting another day in Phnom Penh! City tour by a Tuk Tuk is fun and it is the best way to explore the city with views of many attractions.

Hiring a tuk tuk in Phnom Penh is not that difficult. There are tuk tuks parked along the streets and most of the time we came out from the hotel, the drivers reached us offering their taxi service. To visit Wat Phnom , we hired a tuk tuk and the cost was $3.

Wat Phnom is a beautiful temple located in a hilly area. Inside the temple is full of Buddha statues while outside of the temple building is with beautiful structures and carvings.

After spending time visiting Wat Phnom , we decided to visit the Central Market which is also known as Phsar Thmey. As one of the landmarks in Phnom Penh, this Central Market is popular for its unique building structure. It is a wonderful place to buy anything from fresh vegetables, flowers to gems and jewelry.

How to get Cambodia Visa in Singapore

Cambodia visa requirements are one of the main things to check before planning a tour to any part of Cambodia. In this post I want to share how to get Cambodia visa in Singapore as this will help you to get your visa before you reach Cambodia.

With the launch of e-Visa facility, you can easily apply Cambodia tourist visa online by visiting the www.evisa.gov.kh.However,Sri Lanka passport holders are not eligible for Cambodia e-Visa facility. Although Sri Lankans are eligible for Visa on Arrival, we decided to apply Cambodia visa from the embassy in Singapore.

Here is our experience which can be helpful for you too.

Planning a trip to Cambodia

We are planning our next holiday to Cambodia. Isn’t this interesting? I am really excited. As a beautiful destination in Southeast Asia,  Cambodia is full of historical attractions and rich with cultural activities. So, I am sure our holiday will be really full of excitement!

Planning a trip to Cambodia is not that difficult. However, it is always good to check the important things before you book your flights and hotels in order to enjoy a safe and interesting holiday.

Here are our concerns and tour plans so far.

(Update:We travelled to Phnom Penh,Cambodia.Check our Phnom Penh itinerary)

Check the Cambodia Visa Requirements

Visa requirements are different from country to country. So, this is our first concern when it comes to plan any holiday. Anyway as Sri Lankans we are eligible for Visa on Arrival facility to enter in to Cambodia. Applying for Cambodia visa is really easy as they provide eVisa facility. In 3 easy steps you can apply visa if required. However,it is sad that Sri Lankan passport holders are not eligible for eVisa facility,so we need to apply visa on arrival.

But,instead of using visa on arrival facility to enter into Cambodia,we decided to apply Cambodia visa from the Cambodia embassy in Singapore. This will sure save our time which we have to spend in the immigration once we are in Cambodia.

Check how to get Cambodia Visa Singapore.

Decide the attractions or places to visit

We plan a few days tour. So, we can’t visit many popular attractions in Cambodia such as Phnom Penh,Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. If you spend few weeks holiday in Cambodia, you can plan your itinerary covering most of the parts of Cambodia. However, we decided to visit Phnom Penh this time. Also Phnom Penh is with many popular historical attractions which any tourist must see.

Check the Flights

Once we decide our destination in Cambodia, we checked for flights. The days we are planning our holiday is during the Chinese New Year holidays. So, it is peak period which most of people in Singapore travel for holidays. Therefore, it is unavoidable. Flight rates are higher. But, still we managed to find the best flight rates by changing our flying dates slightly. It is not the lowest comparatively normal days. However, for a popular holiday weekend, we could find the best flight rates while combining flights.

Book the hotels

We always like to find hotels near the popular attractions. So we started searching for hotels in Phnom Penh near the historical city. Though we still check for hotels near historical city of Phnom Penh, we found many beautiful hotels around the area with facilities.

Getting here and there

Next important thing to plan before we reach Cambodia is transportation. Possible we will hire taxi for airport transfer. We always love to walk while watching around when the attractions are near the accommodations. Otherwise it would be a mix of taxi hire and public transportation.

List the Attractions in Cambodia or prepare your itinerary

Well, I am planning our things to do in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This list will include the visiting historical attractions such as Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Wat Ounalom wat Langka. Other than the historical places to visit, we also love to visit markets and shopping centers while experiencing the cultural activities. As we travel with our kid, I am also looking for attractions for kids in Phnom Penh.

Money and currency rates

As for any other country, this is our next concern. As I found, it is easy to use dollars there while using Cambodian riel for some transactions.

So far these are our basic travel plans and things to check before we travel to Cambodia, Phnom Penh. I hope to update the blog with our actual experiences once we are back!

Have you been to Phnom Penh, Cambodia? If so please share your tips and suggestions. These would be really useful for us to plan our next holiday!
